Picture this: A group of college students embarks on a study-abroad trip to Romania, only to encounter that their new school is patrolled by vampires seeking to break an age-old curse. Got it? Good. Now represent this scenario chock-full of gratuitous nudity, stoner nutriment and painfully unfunny moments (Farting horses? Check. Penis broken in a laptop? You betcha.). It’s the ordinal installment of National Lampoon’s Dorm Daze series, and admirer Rusty (Oren Skoog) is an undersexed co-ed who forms an online relationship with Draguta (a sophisticated play on words that even Bram Stoker would be proud of), a hunchbacked European girl whose dwarf father runs the European Razvan University. Draguta (Irena A. Hoffman) is so repulsive that her dad literally has to chain up her boyfriends to keep them from escaping. All the while, the once-dead-now-alive-what-a-surprise King Radu, a Rusty doppelganger also played by Skoog, is in search of his vampire bride, whose soul was stolen centuries earlier. These two worlds then collide in epic fashion, with undergrads pit against the undead. The biggest loser? The audience.
It’s hard to say which is worse: the cast with virtually set acting skills or the fluffy script devoid of any comedic value. Both are awfully dull and at times painful to endure. Literally, the only redeeming quality of Transylmania is its brisk pace, which thankfully makes its 92-minute run instance feel more same 60.
Between the stereotyped characters and 7th-grade bedroom humor, Transylmania completely revamps the unfunny scale, just when you thought teen comedies couldn’t intend any worse. Movies same this are the reason the rest of the world hates America.
